Steve Fothergill

Steve Fothergill is Professor in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research at Sheffield Hallam University.  An economist by background, he has worked on numerous issues around UK regional development for the best part of three decades.

His research has often proved innovative and controversial, and his more recent work on unemployment and economic inactivity is no exception.  His new book, Work to Welfare: How Men Become Detached from the Labour Market, adds to earlier studies such as Incapacity Benefit and Unemployment and The Real Level of Unemployment.

His research has  involved work on the labour market in a wide variety of localities, including the coalfields, rural areas and seaside towns
